Introduction

As a software engineer, I frequently read articles and forum threads about web development. However, I often lack confidence when talking with foreign clients or during job interviews for international companies. Watching movies and reading texts in English daily hasn’t guaranteed effective communication with native speakers. I never believed in the effectiveness of traditional English courses, and hiring a tutor was too costly.

The Struggles of Traditional Learning

Traditional learning often involves attending a classroom and receiving a lot of theory that students rarely practice in real-life situations. It’s like learning the theory of cooking without ever stepping into a kitchen. This approach slows down learning and makes it forgettable. I believe learning English must include speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary simultaneously in real scenarios. Daily classes with tutors could be the best option for those who can’t access native environments and practice on their own.

Years ago, I tried iTalki, which seemed convenient and offered a free global community for real conversations and cultural exchange. I spoke with people from Brazil, China, Malaysia, and more. However, many were hesitant to speak or respond to questions due to privacy concerns on the internet and others were at the same level as me.

Discovering a New Approach

To achieve fluency, I began talking with my sister, who has lived in the US for 20 years. In 2023, as AI advancements progressed, ChatGPT gained popularity. In February 2024, I tried Praktika after seeing an Instagram ad featuring a 3D avatar responding to human dialogue. I subscribed for three months and practiced five days a week. The app evaluated me with a quick survey and designed a study program focused on my goals, such as studying, traveling, or job-related objectives. I was impressed by the natural flow of conversations with the AI chatbot.

Engaging in Conversation

After four months of using Praktika and the release of GPT-4, I decided to have a dual program. Praktika provided an educational approach, and GPT allowed me to practice natural conversations. This combination proved to be highly effective. For example, in the morning, I asked GPT questions about concerns or tasks for the day while driving to the gym. At night, I completed a lesson on Praktika.

I appreciate GPT’s natural pauses, concise responses, and ability to incorporate real-time information. It’s like talking to someone well-informed and up-to-date.

Note: I tried Gemini, the new Google Assistant, in July, but found its voice less natural and its responses overly detailed and dull. I don’t recommend it.

Gamifying Language Learning

Praktika includes cultural podcasts, informative articles on finance and nature conservation, and sometimes recalls previous lessons to provide examples of new grammar rules. You can also choose an avatar with the desired accent. I prefer Dwayne, a virtual tutor who “works” as a comedian, adding a touch of humor to the lessons.

The Benefits of this Method

These apps have significantly improved my ability to communicate with international clients and colleagues. I progressed from a B1 to a B2 level in English proficiency within four months. English communication is crucial not only for my job but also for understanding news and connecting with people globally.

Conclusion

I highly recommend this self-directed method for learning English to anyone with basic conversational skills. This approach not only improves grammar and vocabulary but also enhances overall fluency.
